Learn some of the biggest
DO's and DON'Ts
of bartending and bar hopping!

Things that Bartenders just CAN'T STAND:

* Yelling customers referring to them as "Baby," "Dude," "Hey Man," "Doll," etc.
* Pounding/snapping/whistling to get their attention
* Being told how to make a drink
* Grubbing for a free drink/shot
* "Can I keep my bag/purse/jacket behind the bar?"
* Asking for a price list for all the drinks at the bar
* Paying with crumpled/wadded money
* Ordering one drink at a time instead of all at once
* Telling them to smile when they're swamped with customers
* Leaving a pile of small change as a tip
* Complaining that prices are too high
* Ripping up napkins/beer labels and leaving them all over the bar
* Customers who get mad for being asked for their ID
* Trying to tell them a story when they are extremely busy
* Complaining that a drink doesn't taste strong enough
* Getting their attention just to make them wait while you and your friends decide what to order

Some additional peeves from our fellow bartenders...

*Takes to long to get a drink you say? Well a contributing factor to that is you just waited in line for 10 minutes (looking at a wall of bottles) and when you got to the bar you look at me and say "um, I'm not sure what I should order...." There is only one way to deal with this and that's to shout out the word NEXT!!
- Adam, BC Canada

* Uneducated drinkers. If you don't know how to drink, learn. Your bartender is not your guru. Pick up a book, make some drinks on your own, and then come to your bar. When bartenders are waiting on 100 people, we don't have time or patience to make "something fruity"...
- Weasel, Bison Inn

* Asking the bartender "what's good" at a busy bar is JUST PLAIN WRONG. As if I have nothing better to do that give him a rundown of every drink I know how to make!
- Shelly, Troy, NY

*Some moron calls the bar while you are busy and wants to order a drink while sitting at the bar and sees you are busy. I served that person last in a long line of drinkers and told him if he ever does that again he will not be welcome anymore!
- Mike, Tucson, AZ

*Serving someone who then tries to tell you who to serve next. "No we won't serve your mate next to you, or the guy behind you and all other customers just because you know them, or your mate at the other side of the bar -it's first come, first served."
- Gavin, Newcastle, UK

A few Do's and Don'ts for the bartenders:

* Don't serve a poorly-made drink. It doesn't matter if you're working at a high-class martini bar or a swill hole dive. Just get it right, dude.

* Treat all your customers equally.. (That is, of course, unless you get some jerk pounding on the bar demanding a drink or the like, at which point you should most definitely serve him or her LAST!)

* Keep your bar as clean as possible. People do not like to stick to it. Really.

* Don't take sides in a heated debate at the bar - the people you oppose probably won't tip you. And, that sucks.

* Three words: "Right behind you." Your fellow bartending coworkers don't need to get a black eye because you failed to mention that you're all up in their space.
